Term Life Insurance Guide: Coverage Amount, Term Length & Quotes

Updated May 28, 2026 · 11 min read · term life insurance

Term life insurance is usually the cleanest way to protect dependents. Size the cover to income replacement and debts—then shop quotes with identical assumptions.

How much cover do you need?

A common starting framework is 10–15× annual income, adjusted for existing savings, spouse income, mortgage balance, and years until children are independent. Under-insuring to “save premium” defeats the purpose.

Choosing term length

  • Match the term to your longest financial obligation (mortgage or child education)
  • Prefer level premiums you can sustain
  • Review conversion options if health risk may rise later

Riders worth a second look

Not every rider is valuable. Prioritize clarity of base death benefit. Add riders only when they solve a specific, likely need—not because they were bundled in a quote.
